Before the pit he denied until the late 1980s, a seven-year career as a Thai boxer and trained in the Master Sken Academy . Without preparation for amateur boxing, he switched to the professional boxing camp.
He suffered his first defeat in his ninth fight against Crawford Ashley, two-time European champion and world championship challenger to Michael Nunn and Virgil Hill . In September 1991 he defeated Nicky Piper prematurely. He also won his following eight fights by knockout, where he was British champion and European champion. In June 1995 he boxed for the first time for the WBO World Cup against Ralf Rocchigiani , but went down three times against the German and gave up the fight in the eleventh round due to injury. Rocchigiani, who also suffered a knockdown, had also suffered a cut injury to his left eye. After three construction wins, there was a rematch in Germany in October 1997, this time Thompson won on points. He was able to defend the WBO title twice against Chris Eubank in 1998 . In March 1999 he lost the belt to Johnny Nelson .
By knocking out Terry Dunstan, European champion and IBF world championship challenger, he became British champion again in December 1999. In May 2000 the European Championship belt followed again by knocking out Frenchman Alain Simon with a title defense by knockout in the second round against Russian Alexei Ilyin, 1998 World Cup challenger to Juan Gómez . In February 2001 he managed another knockout win against former IBF world champion Uriah Grant .
Against Ezra Sellers, he was surprisingly three times on the ground in November 2001 before losing in the fourth round by knockout. His opponent also suffered two knockdowns. In September 2004 he managed a surprising victory in the fifth round against David Haye after his corner of the ring threw in the towel after her protégé had knocked down twice. He won his last fight in November 2005 against Frédéric Serrat.
