Conclave 1758

The conclave of 1758 met after the death of Pope Benedict XIV († May 3, 1758) and met from May 15, 1758 to July 6, 1758. It lasted 52 days and elected Clement XIII. to the Pope.

When the conclave met on May 15, 1758, there were 45 participants, the number of which fell to 44 in the end after Cardinal Bardi left the conclave. Only ten cardinals remained absent from the election, of which Giovanni Battista Mesmer did not participate for health reasons, although he was in Rome at the time. The Patriarch of Lisbon, José Manoel da Câmara, died shortly after the conclave. The venue of the conclave was the Vatican.

Against the election of Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini put the French King Louis XV. his veto.

When choosing Clemens XIII. there should have been considerable abstentions.
