The 1623 conclave was the electoral assembly of the cardinals after the death of Pope Gregory XV. and lasted from July 19, 1623 to August 6, 1623. His election fell after 18 days on Maffeo Barberini, who called himself Pope Urban VIII .

The college of cardinals comprised 66 members at the beginning of the conclave, of which 12 cardinals were not in Rome at the time of the conclave , so that the conclave had 54 participants.

The conclave was divided into four groups:

  • The ancients : They were cardinals who had been appointed before Pope Paul V.
  • The Prince-Cardinals : They consisted of the Farnese and d'Este, as well as Cardinal di Savoia.
  • The Borghesiani : They were the creatures of Pope Paul V and numbered between 22 and 25 cardinals.
  • The Ludovisiani : They were given by the cardinal nepot of the late Pope Gregory XV. Ludovico Ludovisi . Only having 15 members, their number later grew to 20.
