Participating cardinals

Of 54 cardinals eligible to vote , 51 took part in the conclave, including the archbishops of Cologne and Munich from German-speaking countries. József Mindszenty and Aloysius Stepinac were absent for political reasons. Edward Aloysius Mooney died of a heart attack three hours before the conclave began.
