Carlos María Javier Cardinal de la Torre Nieto (born November 14, 1873 in Quito , Ecuador ; † July 31, 1968 ibid) was Archbishop of Quito .

Life

Carlos María de la Torre studied Catholic theology and philosophy in the seminary in Quito and at the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" in Rome . In 1896 he received his doctorate in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and in 1906 in canon law .

On December 19, 1896, he received the sacrament of ordination . He then worked until 1911 as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Quito (in Machachi and Pelileo ) and lecturer at the local seminary. In addition, he performed various tasks in the administration of the archdiocese.

1911 appointed him Pope Pius X to the Bishop of Loja ; He received his episcopal ordination on May 26, 1912, the Archbishop of Quito, Federico González Suárez , co-consecrators were Manuel Polit , Bishop of Cuenca , and Juan María Riera , Bishop of Guayaquil . In 1919 the appointment was made by Pope Benedict XV. to the bishop of Riobamba . Pope Pius XI In 1926 he made him head of the diocese of Guayaquil and in 1933 appointed him Archbishop of Quito.

He was the first cardinal from Ecuador. On several occasions he represented the Pope as papal legate . After the Pope's death, he took part in the 1958 conclave . He attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council . The almost 90-year-old cardinal did not attend the conclave of 1963 for health reasons.

Carlos María de la Torre resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Quito in 1967 and died the following year on July 31st in the capital of Ecuador, where he was buried in the cathedral .
