Pablo Cardinal Muñoz Vega SJ (born May 23, 1903 in Mira , Carchi , Ecuador , †  June 3, 1994 ) was Archbishop of Quito .

Life

Pablo Muñoz Vega joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus in 1918 and studied at the Motherhouse of the Jesuits in Ecuador, at the Colegio Máximo de Oña in Burgos, Spain, and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He received the in Rome on July 25, 1933 sacrament of Holy Orders . After initially staying at the Gregoriana, Muñoz Vega was appointed to the order of the Jesuit Provincial in Ecuador in 1949, which he remained until 1955. From 1958 to 1963 he was rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

On February 7, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Ceramus and ordered him to Koadjutorerzbischof in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quito . He was ordained bishop on March 19, 1964 by Carlo Cardinal Confalonieri , secretary of the Consistorial Congregation at that time (from 1967 Congregation for the Bishops ); Co-consecrators were Archbishop Antonio Samorè , secretary of the Curia and later Cardinal to the Curia , and Archbishop Martin John O'Connor , then rector of the Pontifical North America College . As a result, he took part in the Second Vatican Council . On June 23, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him. to the Archbishop of Quito. He also became President of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference.

Since the Archdiocese of Quito is a bishopric traditionally associated with the cardinal dignity , Pablo Muñoz Vega was on April 28, 1969 by Paul VI. accepted into the college of cardinals as cardinal priest with the Roman titular church of San Roberto Bellarmino . In 1978 he attended the conclave in August and October .

On June 1, 1985, Pablo Muñoz Vega resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Quito for reasons of age, his application was granted by Pope John Paul II .

Pablo Muñoz Vega died in June 1994 and was buried in Quito Cathedral.
