Gennaro Cardinal Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte (born April 10, 1851 in Naples , † February 16, 1948 in the Vatican ) was an Italian clergyman, diplomat of the Holy See and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte was born to Angelo Granito, the fourth marquis of Castellabate, and Paolina Francesca Pignatelli y Aymerich, the seventh princess of Belmonte and ninth duchess of Acerenza. He studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Naples , received his doctorate in theology and was ordained a priest on June 7, 1879 . From 1879 to 1886 he worked as secretary to the Archbishop of Naples, from 1886 to 1891 he was editor of the newspaper La Libertà Cattolica .

In 1891 he was appointed official of the Archdiocese of Naples , in 1892 he became an employee of the Roman Curia in the department for extraordinary ecclesiastical affairs. From 1893 to 1896 his first assignment abroad took him to France , where he worked as an attaché to the nunciature . In 1896 he was a member of the papal embassy, ​​which was summoned to Russia for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II , and in 1897 he accompanied the papal embassy, ​​which took part in the celebrations to mark the sixtieth jubilee of Queen Victoria . From 1897 to 1899 he worked as an advisor to the Apostolic Nunciature in France, most recently as chargé d'affaires.

In November 1899 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Edessa in Macedonia and the apostolic nuncio in Belgium . He was ordained bishop on November 26, 1899, Cardinal Secretary of State Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Casimiro Gennari and Carlo Caputo . Pope Pius XI appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for Ceremonies in 1930 . On July 9 of the same year he became Cardinal Dean and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia .

Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte was Honorary and Devotional Grand Cross Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from December 1937 to 1938 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta. In 1937 he became a cardinal patron of the Order of Malta and remained so until his death.

Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte died on February 16, 1948 in the Vatican and was buried in the crypt of the Capuchins in the Campo Verano cemetery in Rome. He was the last living cardinal created by Pope Pius X and at the time of his death the oldest cardinal in the world.
