Vincenzo Cardinal Vannutelli (born December 5, 1836 in Palestrina , † July 9, 1930 in Rome ) was Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Vincenzo Vannutelli, younger brother of Cardinal Serafino Vannutelli , studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received on 23 December 1860, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1863 he became an auditor at the Nunciature in the Netherlands . In 1875 he was taken over by Pope Pius IX. appointed Apostolic Protonotary. On January 23, 1880 he was by Pope Leo XIII. appointed titular archbishop of Sardis and apostolic vicar of Constantinople ( Turkey ). The episcopal ordination donated him on February 2, 1880 Giovanni Cardinal Simeoni . On 22 December 1882 he was Apostolic Internuncio in Brazil and on October 4, 1883 Apostolic Nuncio of Portugal .

Pope Leo XIII. took him on December 30, 1889 as a cardinal in pectore in the college of cardinals . His public proclamation as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite took place on June 23, 1890.

From May 1891 he was official of the Roman Curia and from 1892 its prefect . On December 16, 1896, he became archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . In 1898 he took part in a Eucharistic Congress in Brussels as papal envoy . On April 19, 1900, he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina and in 1902 appointed Prefect of the Council Congregation . After Leo's death, Cardinal Vannutelli participated in the 1903 conclave . In 1904 he traveled to Armagh as a legate to attend the dedication of St. Patrick's Cathedral . Pope Pius X appointed him on October 20, 1908 as Prefect of the Apostolic Signature , the Supreme Court of the Roman Curia. He also sent him to several Eucharistic Congresses that took place during his pontificate. After the Pope's death, he took part in the 1914 conclave . Benedict XV appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for Ceremonies in 1914 .

On December 6, 1915, Pope Benedict XV appointed Vannutelli as cardinal dean and thus also cardinal bishop of Ostia , an office that he held until his death. In 1916 the order for the Pro-Datar of the Apostolic Datarie was made . After Benedict's death, he called the cardinals together in his function as cardinal dean for the conclave in 1922 . Pope Pius XI entrusted him with the preparations for the jubilee year 1925. Five years later Vincenzo Vannutelli died after a kidney infection at the age of 93 in Rome. At that time he was the oldest member of the College of Cardinals.
