The 1922 conclave took place between February 2 and 6, 1922 after the death of Pope Benedict XV. instead of. It ended with the election of the Archbishop of Milan , Achille Ratti, as Pope Pius XI.

The conclave lasted five days and took 14 ballots. The Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri , supported by the moderate wing of the College of Cardinals, and the Patriarch of Venice, Pietro La Fontaine, supported by the conservative zelanti around Rafael Merry del Val , were considered papabile .

Participating cardinals

On the day when Pope Benedict XV. died there were 60 cardinals. Enrique Almaraz y Santos , Archbishop of Toledo in Spain , died on the same day as the Pope. Of the 60 cardinals eligible to vote, three did not reach the Vatican until after the beginning of the conclave. Four other purple bearers had announced their non-participation because of illness or age, but also because of the distance to Rome . Thus 53 cardinals were involved in the election. Among them were three Germans and two Austrians.
