Conclave 1774–1775

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The conclave from 1774 to 1775 met from October 5, 1774 to February 15, 1775 . It became necessary because Pope Clement XIV died on September 22, 1774. His successor was Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Braschi chosen which the Pope name Pius VI. assumed.

History and course of the election

The late Pope Clement XIV, after being pressured by France, Spain and Naples, abolished the Jesuit order in 1773 . The aftermath of this decision also affected the conclave. The Bourbon royal family expressed its resistance to a possible election of Giovanni Carlo Boschi , since he was on the side of the Jesuits, and instead supported Marcantonio Colonna .

On October 5, 1774, Cardinal Dean Fabrizio Serbelloni opened the conclave, which lasted 134 days. It was not until February 12, 1775, that the French Cardinal François-Joachim de Pierre de Bernis spoke to the relatively impartial Giovanni Angelo Braschi and proposed him to the other parties in the following days. On February 15, Braschi could finally be elected. A week later he received as Pius VI. the episcopal ordination and was crowned by Cardinal Protodeacon Alessandro Albani .

The cardinals

After the death of Clement XIV there were 55 cardinals, two of whom died during the sedis vacancy . 46 cardinals attended the conclave.
