The conclave of 1846 met from June 14th to 16th, 1846 in the Quirinal Palace , after Pope Gregory XVI. died on June 1, 1846.

The conclave, which began on June 14, was attended by 50 of the 62 cardinals . Almost all of them (49) were Italian. They mostly came from the former States Papal States , Kingdom of the Two Sicily, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany or the Italian regions of Austria. In the fourth ballot, Cardinal Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti was elected, who had previously been Bishop of Imola and named Pius IX as Pope . assumed. The Archbishop of Milan , Karl Kajetan Cardinal von Gaisruck , arrived after the last ballot to announce the veto of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I against the election of Mastai-Ferretti. Gaisruck came too late, however, so that the new Pope could also take office.
