Tommaso Cardinal Bernetti

Tommaso Bernetti (born December 29, 1779 in Fermo ; † March 21, 1852 ibid) was a cardinal state secretary of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

The son of Count Salvatore Bernetti and Giuditta Brancadoro studied law and literature at the University of Fermo and received the tonsure in Rome on February 21, 1801 .

In 1809, when Rome was taken by Napoleon, he fled with his uncle, Cardinal Cesare Brancadoro, first to Paris and then to Reims . In July 1814 he took over a secret assignment from Pope Pius VII to the Austrian Emperor. After his return, Bernetti was given responsibility for the negotiations at Murat after the French troops had to leave Rome. He prepared for the Pope's return in 1814.

In October 1826 he was appointed by Pope Leo XII. elevated to cardinal and transferred to him the titular church of San Cesareo in Palatio in May 1827 , although he had only received the minor orders and was not ordained priest before 1839 . In 1828 he was appointed cardinal state secretary . He held this office until 1829 and then again from 1831 to 1836. Cardinal Bernetti took part in three papal elections: in the conclave of 1829 , which elected Pope Pius VIII , in the conclave of 1830/31 , which Pope Gregory XVI. elected and at the conclave in 1846 , from the Pius IX. emerged as the new Summus Pontifex. After his ordination in 1839, Bernetti received from Pope Gregory XVI. the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso .

In 1847 Bernetti retired to Fermo, where he died in 1852 and was buried in the family crypt.
