Giuseppe Albani
Giuseppe Andrea Albani (born September 13, 1750 in Rome , † December 3, 1834 in Pesaro ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .
Life
Cardinal Albani came from a respected Italian family, descendants of Albanian religious refugees ( Arbëresh ) who immigrated to Italy in the 15th century. He studied at the seminary of Siena and later in Rome. Pope Clement XIV awarded him the title of papal house prelate . Under Pius VI. In 1787 he became an auditor of the Apostolic Chamber . In 1794 he was sent to Vienna to negotiate an alliance between the Papal States and Emperor Franz II . After the French occupation of Rome, Albani tried in vain to Pius VI. Secure refuge in imperial territories.
Albani was created cardinal by Pope Pius VII on February 23, 1801 and received the title diakonia of San Cesareo in Palatio . From 1828 he was cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata . During the Napoleonic occupation of Rome, he took refuge in Vienna from 1808 to 1814. In 1817 he became prefect of the Council Congregation . Albani attended the conclave of 1823 that Pope Leo XII. elected and supported the candidacy of State Secretary Ercole Consalvi . He also took part in the conclave of 1829 , in which Pope Pius VIII was elected, and finally in the conclave of 1830/1831 , which Pope Gregory XVI. chose. In the latter conclave he led the moderate wing of the College of Cardinals , which supported Bartolomeo Pacca .
From the end of March 1829 to December 1830 he was Cardinal State Secretary of Pius VIII. As such, he sought diplomatic relations with liberal movements in Europe, for example with the supporters of the Belgian Revolution and the French King Louis-Philippe I, who ruled from 1830 .
From 1830 he was cardinal librarian of the Roman Church and thus nominal head of the Vatican library .
Other cardinals ( Gian Girolamo Albani , Annibale Albani , Alessandro Albani , Gian Francesco Albani ) and Gianfrancesco Albani, who became Pope Clement XI in 1700, come from his family . was chosen.
