Alessandro Albani (born October 15, 1692 in Urbino , Papal States , † December 11, 1779 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Pope Innocent XIII appointed the nephew of his predecessor Clemens XI. , Alessandro Albani, who had not received any ordinations until then, cardinal in February 1721. He was assigned the title diakonia Santa Maria in Cosmedin . Only after his elevation to cardinal was he ordained a subdeacon . In 1741 he became cardinal deacon of Sant'Agata dei Goti , but kept his old titular deaconry in Commendam . In 1747 he finally moved to the titular diaconia Santa Maria in Via Lata . He took part in the conclave of 1724, which Pope Benedict XIII. elected, at the conclave of 1730, Pope Clement XII. determined, also at the conclave of 1740, which Pope Benedict XIV. elected, also at the conclave of 1758, which Pope Clement XIII. on the chair of Peter, finally at the conclave of 1769, from which Pope Clement XIV emerged .

Albani came from an Italian family whose ancestors had immigrated from Albania in the 15th century , which is where the surname came from. Other cardinals ( Annibale Albani , Gian Francesco Albani and Giuseppe Albani ) and a pope, Clement XI, come from this family . who was a brother of Alessandro's father.

Albani was particularly interested in art and built the Villa Albani in Rome in 1760 , where he collected Roman and Greek art. To finance the villa, he had to sell part of his extensive collection that is now in the Capitoline Museums . The artistic design of the Villa Albani was carried out by Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Anton Raphael Mengs . Albani was a member of the Accademia Etrusca .
