Andrea Cardinal Aiuti (born June 17, 1849 in Rome , † April 28, 1905 there ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Andrea Aiuti was of Sicilian origin, the family came from the patriciate of the city of Trapani . He studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary , a doctorate in philosophy, theology and canon law, and received on 22 September 1871, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Aiuti initially worked as a member of the Roman Curia , then in the service of papal diplomacy.

In 1876 he was Nunciature secretary, later chargé d'affaires , in Brazil. In 1879 he went to Munich as Nunciature Secretary , where he was promoted to auditor in 1882 . In the same position, Aiuti moved to the Apostolic Delegation in India in 1886. On March 31, 1887, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Achrida and Apostolic Delegate of India . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Bombay , George Porter SJ , on May 1, 1887; Co- consecrators were Pietro Caprotti , Bishop of Hyderabad , and Bernhard Beiderlinden , Bishop of Poona . Aiuti was secretary of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith from 1891 to 1893 and on June 7, 1893 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Bavaria . A few days later he was appointed titular archbishop of Tamiathis . In 1896 Andrea Aiuti went to Portugal as a nuncio . In 1898 he received the dignity of Papal Assistant to the Throne . In 1903 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. as Cardinal Priest with the title Church San Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni) in the Cardinal College added. Aiuti took part in the conclave of 1903 , in which Pope Pius X was elected.

Paul Maria Baumgarten reports on Andrea Aiuti that he was very gifted with languages. He has mastered Italian, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Hindi "with the same delicacy and ease".

After his death he was buried in the Roman cemetery of Campo Verano . In Rome, the Via Cardinale Andrea Aiuti is named after him.
