The diocese of Poona ( lat . : Dioecesis Poonensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in India . It is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Bombay and consists of the districts of Pune , Satara , Solapur , Sangli and Kolhapur . The diocese of Poona has had a partnership with the Bavarian diocese of Eichstätt since 1955 . It is the second oldest international partnership of a German diocese after the partnership between the archbishopric of Cologne and Tokyo (since 1954).

history

The Apostolic Vicariate of Poona was established on 1854. Its direction, pastoral care and mission were entrusted to the German Jesuits . It was elevated to a diocese on September 1, 1886. The Jesuit Bernard Beider-Linden became the first bishop of Poona. On October 20, 1953, the diocese received the districts of Ratnagiri and Pune, which were previously under the Archdiocese of Goa . On November 30 of the same year it ceded parts of its territory to the diocese of Belgaum with the districts of Dharwar and Bijapur . The next loss of territory occurred in May 1987 when the diocese of Nashik was established and received the districts of Nashik , Dhule , Jalgaon and Ahmadnagar . In July 2005 the diocese ceded areas to the newly established diocese of Sindhudurg and has had its current form ever since. The diocese of Poona consists of the districts of Pune, Satara, Solapur, Sangli and Kolhapur.

From February 11-14, 2003, the first diocese synod of the diocese of Poona took place in Ishvani Kendra.
