Valerian D'Souza

Valerian D'Souza (born October 3, 1933 in Poona , Maharashtra , India , † February 25, 2020 in Hadapsar , Pune , India) was an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Poona .

Life

Valerian D'Souza entered the Pune Pontifical Seminary after studying physics, chemistry and mathematics (graduation: B. Sc.) At the Nowrosjee Wadia College and studied philosophy in Pune. He completed his theology studies at the Jesuit Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1961 and was incardinated in the clergy of the diocese of Poona . At Garrison High School (today: St. Jude High School) he completed a bachelor's degree in education. In 1971 he became vicar general, from 1976 capitular vicar, of the diocese of Poona.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 7, 1977 Bishop of Poona, the partner diocese of the diocese of Eichstätt . The Archbishop of Bombay , Valerian Cardinal Gracias , donated him episcopal ordination on September 25 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Ignatius P. Lobo , Bishop of Belgaum , and Charles Gomes S.J. , Bishop of Ahmedabad .

Among other things, he was chairman of the commission for seminaries, clergy and religion and chairman of the commission for youth in the Regional Bishops' Conference West (CBCI Western Region). In the Indian Bishops 'Conference itself he then held the presidency of the Bishops' Conference West (CBCI Western Region) and was chairman of the commission for women. In 2002 he became Vice President of the Indian Bishops' Conference. Pope John Paul II appointed him to the Pontifical Council Cor Unum in 2000, and in 2007 the mandate was extended by five years. In 2007 he was Apostolic Administratoer of the Diocese of Nashik . Valerian D'Souza was known as a singing bishop. In 2020 he published the books L "ove is the only answer" and "Shepherd's Voice".

On April 4, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
