The Archdiocese of Bombay ( Latin Archidioecesis Bombayensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Mumbai .
history
The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Bombay is the Apostolic Vicariate Idalcan / Deccan / Bijapur , founded in 1637 out of the Archdiocese of Goa , which changed its name to Great Mogul in 1669 . On May 17, 1784 it gave up parts of its territory to establish the Mission sui juris Hindustan . In 1920 it changed its name again to Bombay . On September 1, 1886 this was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric . On May 20, 1948, parts of the diocesan area were given to the newly established Karachi diocese . In 1949 further parts of the area were ceded to the newly created diocese of Ahmedabad . Another assignment of territory followed in 1966, as the diocese of Baroda was established. On April 30, 1988, parts of the diocesan area were given to the newly formed Kalyan diocese . The Archdiocese of Bombay received its current form in 1998 after the territory was ceded to the Diocese of Vasai .
In 2019, the incumbent Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias admitted that he had not responded adequately to allegations of sexual abuse .
