Simon Ignatius Cardinal Pimenta (born March 1, 1920 in Marol near Mumbai (Bombay), India , † July 19, 2013 in Mumbai) was Archbishop of Bombay .

Life

Simon Pimenta studied Catholic theology , philosophy , education and mathematics at the seminary of Bombay , at St. Pius College and at the State University of Bombay . After his ordination in 1949 he was sent to Rome sent where he 1954 the Pontifical Urban University doctorate in the Department of Canon Law doctorate .

From 1954 to 1959 he worked in the Archdiocese of Bombay as the personal secretary of Archbishop Valerian Cardinal Gracias , Vice Chancellor and assistant pastor. From 1959 he led the parish of the cathedral of Bombay as pastor and at the same time taught liturgy at the archbishop's seminary, was the rain of the seminary of St. Pius X. and was the episcopal vicar for the training of the next generation of priests.

On June 5, 1971, Pope Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Bocconia and auxiliary bishop in Bombay. The Archbishop of Bombay, Cardinal Gracias, ordained him episcopal on June 29 of the same year. Co- consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Longinus Gabriel Pereira and the Bishop of Poona , William Zephyrine Gomes . On February 26, 1977, Paul VI appointed Pimenta as titular archbishop pro hac vice and coadjutor archbishop of Bombay. On September 11, 1978, he became Archbishop of Bombay. He held this office until his retirement for reasons of age on November 8, 1996. He was particularly committed to pastoral and social affairs in his diocese with 12 hospitals, 44 polyclinics and numerous schools. From 1982 to 1988 he served as President of the Bishops' Conference of the Roman Catholic Church in India .

Pope John Paul II accepted him in 1988 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Mundi a Torre Spaccata in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Pimenta took part in the 8th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican in 1990. There Pimenta was one of three presidents of the Synod of Bishops on the formation of priests in Rome.

Simon Cardinal Pimenta did not take part in either the 2005 or 2013 conclave because the age limit of 80 years was exceeded . He last lived in a home for retired clergymen, where he died on July 19, 2013 at the age of 93.
