Valerian Cardinal Gracias (born October 23, 1900 in Karachi , British India , † September 11, 1978 in Bombay ) was Archbishop of Bombay .

Life

Valerian Gracias received his theological and philosophical training in Bangalore , Kandy and Rome . He received on 3 October 1926, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a parish pastor in Bandra , a suburb of Bombay. After completing advanced studies, he became the personal secretary of the Archbishop of Bombay in 1930 . From 1937 to 1946 he worked as a pastor and editor of a newspaper in Bombay.

In 1946 Pope Pius XII appointed him . as titular bishop of Thennesus and auxiliary bishop in Bombay. He received his episcopal ordination on June 29, 1946, the Archbishop of Bombay Thomas Roberts SJ ; Co- consecrators were Victor Fernandes , Bishop of Mangalore , and Thomas Pothacamury , Bishop of Bangalore . Pope Pius XII appointed him Archbishop of Bombay in 1950. On January 12, 1953, he accepted him as cardinal priest pro hac vice of the titular church of Santa Maria in Via Lata in the college of cardinals . Valerian Cardinal Gracias was the first Indian created cardinal . He took part in the conclave of 1958 , the Second Vatican Council and the conclave of 1963 . He was unable to attend the first conclave in 1978 due to illness. Valerian Cardinal Gracias died on September 11, 1978 in Bombay and was buried in the local cathedral.
