The Diocese of Mangalore ( lat. : Dioecesis Mangalorensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Mangalore .

history

The Apostolic Vicariate of Kanara was established in 1674 and ceased to exist in 1700.

The diocese of Mangalore was on May 12, 1845 by Pope Pius IX. as "Apostolic Pro-Vicariate Mangalore" separated from the Apostolic Vicariate Malabar and since then ruled by Bishop Bernardine of St Agnes OCD. When he died in Rome on March 13, 1853, Mangalore was elevated to the position of the regular Apostolic Vicariate just two days later, on March 15, and the Italian Michael Anthony Anfossi was appointed the first Vicar Apostolic.

On September 1, 1886, the Apostolic Vicariate of Mangalore , which had been vacant since 1873, was converted into a diocese, subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bangalore as a suffragan and appointed a diocesan bishop. On June 12, 1923, the Mangalore diocese gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Calicut diocese , and on July 16, 2012 to establish the Udupi diocese .
