Edouard Pingret

Édouard Henri Théophile Pingret (born December 30, 1788 in Saint-Quentin , Aisne, † July 4, 1869 in Saint-Quentin) was a French painter and lithographer.

Pingret studied painting with Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault , and he also attended the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. In 1831 he was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur . From 1850 to 1855 he lived and worked in Mexico City , where he exhibited annually at the Academia de Bellas Artes . He created outstanding portraits, including Napoleon Bonaparte (1808) and General Mariano Arista (1851; Mexico City, Museo Nacional de Historia). One of his most important works in Mexico is the representation of Mexican customs and landscapes. It was also the illustrator of monographs such as Voyage de SM Louis-Philippe Ier Roi des Français au Château de Winsdor. Dédié à SM Victoria, Reine d'Angleterre.

An example of his portrait work can be found in the collection of the Yuko Nii Foundation in Brooklyn, New York. The painting "Reading A Letter by Pingret" is exhibited in the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , USA .
