Jean-Baptiste Regnault
Baron Jean-Baptiste Regnault (born October 17, 1754 in Paris ; † October 12, 1829 there ) was a French painter of classicism .
Life
The gifted Regnault was still a child when he followed his father to America , where he was hired as a cabin boy in the Navy in 1765 and went to sea until 1769.
When he returned to Paris he became a student of the painter Jean Bardin (1732-1809), with whom he stayed in Rome between 1770 and 1775 . There he was enthusiastic about the emerging classicism . In 1776 he was awarded the Prix de Rome for Diogenius and Alexander , one year after Jacques-Louis David , who was a few years older and also a pupil of Bardin .
Admission to the academy took place in 1783 with the painting L'Éducation d'Achille par le centaure Chiron ( The Education of Achilles ) which, due to the balance of composition and forms, the purity of style and the quality of the colors, next to the 1789 in the Academic tradition, the Descent from the Cross, created for the palace chapel of Fontainebleau , is considered one of his best works.
The Descent from the Cross remained one of the artist's few religious works. He preferred mythological , allegorical and historical themes.
Regnault expressed his enthusiasm for the revolution in 1795 in the work Liberty or Death , an allusion to the motto of the Convention . In 1804 he was commissioned to write Napoléon's triumphal march , which the emperor had designated for the Senate, but which is now in Versailles .
The late work is characterized by sensual mythological motifs in the style of boudoir painting of the 18th century.
Jean-Baptiste Regnault died on October 12, 1829 in Paris at the age of 74.
influence
Regnault belonged to the generation of Jacques-Louis David , with whose strong personality he could hardly compete as a teacher at the Académie Royale . His students included Gabriel-Christophe Guérin , Louis Hersent , Michel Delaporte , Auguste Couder , Henri Serrur and Robert Lefèvre . He also influenced Claude-Félix-Théodore Aligny .
