history

The Archdiocese of Trichur was on May 20, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Quod iam pridem as the Apostolic Vicariate of Trichur . Trichur and Kottayam were the first districts established for the Catholic Thomas Christians of the Chaldean rite, but initially under Latin titular bishops. In 1896 local people were appointed Vicars Apostolic; on December 21, 1923, the orderly hierarchy of the Catholic Thomas Christians was restored and the Apostolic Vicariate Trichur of Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Romani Pontifices raised to eparchy , whereby it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Ernakulam as a suffragan diocese. The Trichur eparchy gave up parts of its territory on June 27, 1974 to establish the diocese of Palghat . Another assignment of territory took place on June 22, 1978 to establish the diocese of Irinjalakuda .

The Eparchy Trichur was elevated to an archbishopric on May 18, 1995 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Ad augendum spirituale .
