The Archdiocese of Nagpur ( Latin Archidioecesis Nagpurensis , Marathi नागपूर बिशपच्या अधिकारातील प्रदेश ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Nagpur .
The archdiocese of Nagpur comprises the districts of Bhandara and Nagpur in the state of Maharashtra and the districts of Balaghat , Betul , Chhindwara and Seoni (except for the Tehsil Lakhnadon ) in the state of Madhya Pradesh .
history
The diocese of Nagpur was on July 11, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. Erected from cession of territory by the diocese of Vizagapatam . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore as a suffragan . On July 18, 1932, the Diocese of Nagpur gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Jubbulpore . Further territories were ceded on March 11, 1935 to found the Apostolic Prefecture of Indore , on June 14, 1951 to found the Sambalpur diocese and on December 13, 1951 to found the Raigarh-Ambikapur diocese .
On September 19, 1953, the Diocese of Nagpur was raised to the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Nagpur gave up on May 8, 1955 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Amravati . Further assignments of territory took place on January 16, 1964 to establish the diocese of Pala and on July 29, 1968 to establish the Apostolic Exarchate of Chanda .
