Chhindwara is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

The area is 11,815 km². The administrative seat is the city of Chhindwara .

The population in 2011 was 2,090,922. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 13.07% and was therefore very high. Chhindwara has a gender ratio of 934 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district had a literacy rate of 71.16% in 2011 , an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus slightly above the average for Madhya Pradesh. Almost 92% of the population are Hindus and around 2% are Muslims . Buddhists make up 1.2% of the population. 13% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 24.2% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Chhindwara with 138,291 inhabitants.
