Gottfried Lemperle (born December 17, 1936 in Berlin ) is a German plastic surgeon . Since 1996 he has been the editor of the only handbook of aesthetic surgery in German and founder of the aid organization for plastic surgery, Interplast-Germany eV

Life

Lemperle was born in Berlin as the son of orthodontist Dita Lemperle-Franzmeyer and Hermann Lemperle , German Olympic participant in 1928 and art historian. Gottfried Lemperle grew up in Stuttgart, has seven younger sisters and five children, three of whom also became doctors.

After studying medicine at several German universities, Lemperle received the Dr. med. at the University of Kiel . His training in general surgery at the University of Freiburg was interrupted by a fellowship in immunology at Yale University in New Haven, USA from 1964 to 1966. He began training as a plastic surgeon in 1971 at the Clinic for Plastic Surgery at Markus Hospital, a teaching hospital of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main . He was chairman of the Taunus Music School from 1973 to 1978.

In 1978 Lemperle became Professor of Surgery and Head of Plastic Surgery at the Markus Hospital in Frankfurt, where he continued to develop and teach plastic surgery for 20 years. He enriched the German plastic surgery with a technique of breast reconstruction , aesthetic changes in children with Down syndrome , a penis construction in female transgender patients and an injectable filling material. He has authored more than 350 scientific publications and given over 700 lectures at medical congresses.

In 1998 he was offered a position at the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), but returned to Frankfurt in 2013 to take part again actively in Interplast missions. Lemperle founded Artes Medical, Inc. in San Diego, CA, in 1999 to market the first FDA-approved ArteFill permanent wrinkle remedy in the United States. His similar anti-wrinkle agent made from PMMA microspheres in collagen gel (Artecoll) was approved in Europe in 1994 and has since been distributed worldwide by Hafod Bioscience, BV, in Guangzhou, China. In 2008, Lemperle founded AscentX Medical, Inc. in San Diego, CA to continue clinical development of similar injectable fillers for the treatment of heartburn and stress incontinence.

Interplast-Germany

In 1980 Lemperle founded Interplast-Germany eV, a non-profit organization whose members perform plastic surgery in developing countries. He led more than 40 plastic surgery teams in countries in Asia, Africa and Central America. In 1996 he founded the second Interplast hospital in Sankhu, Nepal and started a similar project in Goma, Congo in 2017.

Awards

Honorary member of Interplast-Germany (1996), the DeTao Academy in Beijing (2011), the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons , of which he was President from 1985–1988 (2012), and the German Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ( 2017).
