Ratlam is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .
The 4861 km² large district is located in the northwest of Madhya Pradesh in the Malwa region. In the western part of the district lies the upper reaches of the Mahi River , while the headwaters of the Chambal are in the northeastern district . The district administration is located in the city of Ratlam .

In the 2011 census, the population was 1,455,069. 10 years earlier it was 1,215,393. The gender ratio is 971 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate is 66.78% (77.54% for men, 55.77% for women). The Hindus form the largest religious group with 87%. 10.38% are Muslims , 2% are followers of Jainism .

history
Ratlam District was established in June 1948 and reorganized in January 1949. It includes the area of the former princely states of Ratlam , Jaora , Sailana , Piploda as well as the Tehsil Ringnod of Dewas Senior , the Tehsil Alot of Dewas Junior and parts of the Tehsils Mandaur of the princely state of Gwalior . The district also includes some villages in the Princely State of Dhar and the Chief Commissioners Provinces of Pant Piploda .
The new town of Ratlam was established by Captain Borthwick in 1829 with widened streets and new buildings. Ratlam was once one of the first trading cities in central India and a center for the trade of opium , tobacco and salt. Before the opening of the Khandwa railway in 1872, there was no more important trading post than Ratlam. Before it became the district capital, the city of Ratlam was the seat of government of the Principality of Ratlam.
