Dhar was a princely state of the Central India Agency in British India ; its capital was the city of Dhar . The ruling Rajput clan of the Parmar traced its descent back to the medieval Paramara dynasty and above all to its most important personality, King Bhoja .

In 1941 the country had an area of 4662 km² and approx. 279,000 inhabitants. Dhar had a state post with its own stamps from 1897 to 1901.

history

As early as the early 15th century, the Malwa region had broken away from the state association of the Sultanate of Delhi ; however, in 1560 it was incorporated into the Mughal Empire by Akbar I. In the phase of the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century, it was lost again in the Marathas .

In 1728 the Peshwa of Pune gave the marath leader Udaji Rao I. Puar some areas in Malwa as a fief, this year is considered to be the founding year of the princely state. Much of it was lost in the following decades; some could be recovered later with the help of the British when Dhar became a British protectorate in 1819 (until 1947). The Princely State of Dhar joined the Indian Union on June 15, 1948 and joined the Madhya Bharat Princely Union on June 16 . On November 1, 1956, all princely states of the Union were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh .

Personalities

Raja Udaji Rao II. Puar (1898-1926) was a lieutenant colonel in the British-Indian Army and was raised in 1918 to Maharaja .
