The Chhatarpur District ( Hindi छतरपुर जिला ) is a district in the historic Bundelkhand region in the northeast of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The administrative and economic center is the city of Chhatarpur with a population of around 170,000 .
geography
The district of Chhatarpur is on the border with Uttar Pradesh . It is limited to the west by the Dhasan River . Neighboring districts are Tikamgarh District in the northwest , Lalitpur District (U. P.) in the west, Sagar District in the southwest , Damoh District in the south , Panna District in the east and Banda and Chitrakoot (U.P.) districts in the north .
The district of Chhatarpur is divided into eleven administrative districts ( Tehsils or Subdivisions ): Bada Malehara, Bijawar, Buxwaha, Chandla, Chhatarpur, Gaurihar, Ghuwara, Laundi, Maharajpur, Nowgong and Rajnagar; it consists of about 1150 villages and only a few medium-sized or smaller towns - Chhatarpur (approx. 170,000), Nowgong (approx. 45,000), Khajuraho (approx. 30,000), Maharajpur (approx. 30,000), Bijawar (approx. 25,000), Laundi (approx.25,000), Bijawar ( approx.20,000 ) and Rajnagar ( approx.15,000 ).
The southern part of the district is traversed by the northeastern foothills of the Vindhyagebirge . The average height above sea level is between 200 and 450 m; the maximum height is around 550 m. The river Banne runs entirely in the area of the district and is dammed shortly before its confluence with the River Ken . The annual rainfall amounts to approx. 900 mm / year, of which approx. 90% are accounted for by the summer monsoon months .
population
As a result of the sustained population growth in large parts of northern India, the population of the district has increased enormously in the last few decades:
year | 1991 | 2001 | 2011 |
Residents | 1,158,076 | 1,474,723 | 1,762,375 |
Hindus dominate the rural villages (around 90%); there is also a not inconsiderable number of Muslims in the cities (around 20%). In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by around 19.5% to around 1.76 million, with the male population clearly exceeding that of the female population. About 77% of the population lives in rural villages; a third of the people (mostly women) are considered illiterate. They speak Hindi and the regional dialect Bundeli .
economy
According to official statistics, the Chhatarpur district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into 640 districts. It is very largely agricultural; only in the cities are there a few larger shops and craft businesses as well as banks and secondary schools. The only rail connection is from Khajuraho to Mahoba (U. P.).
history
The Chhatarpur district was formerly part of the Bundelkhand region , which was dominated in the Middle Ages by the Gupta and later by the Pratihara and the Chandella rulers. After the end of Islamic dominance by the Sultanate of Delhi and the Mughal Empire , the region came under the influence of the Marathas in the 17th and 18th centuries and was largely annexed by the Scindia rulers of Gwalior in 1812 with the permission of the British . Since 1844 the area was also officially under British control. After India's independence (1947), Chhatarpur belonged to the Union of Princely States of Vindhya Pradesh , which was dissolved in 1956 and integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh, which consisted of the central provinces and Madhya Bharat , but was completely reorganized at the time.
Attractions
In the area of the Chhatarpur district, which is otherwise hardly developed for tourism, are the temples of Khajuraho , which are known far beyond the borders of India and have been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO . The Mughal ruins of Dhubela also deserve attention. The approximately 1400 km² large Panna National Park with its Tiger Reserve ( Panna Tiger Reserve ) is often visited by day-trippers from Khajuraho .
