The district of Lalitpur ( Hindi ललितपुर जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The economic and administrative center is the city of Lalitpur with a population of around 140,000 .

geography

The Lalitpur district, which is enclosed on all sides by the state of Madhya Pradesh - with the exception of a narrow corridor in the north - is bounded in the west by the partially dammed Betwa River . Neighboring districts are in the northwest of Jhansi district , in the western districts Shivpuri and Guna (M. P.), in the south and southeast of Sagar district (M. P.), in the eastern district Chhatarpur (M. P.) and in the northeast of Tikamgarh district (M. P.).

The Lalitpur District is divided into the three Tehsils Lalitpur, Mahroni and Talbehat; it consists of 754 villages and four larger cities.

The average height above sea level is between 200 and 450 meters; the highest point is just over 500 m.

population

In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by almost 25% to around 1.22 million, with the male population exceeding the female population by around 10%. About 85% of the population lives in rural villages; a third of people are illiterate, with the proportion of women being significantly higher than that of men. The largest cities are Lalitpur (approx. 140,000 inhabitants), Mahroni (approx. 10,000 inhabitants), Talbehat (approx. 15,000 inhabitants) and Pali (approx. 10,000 inhabitants). A total of 14.4% of the population live in cities.

economy

According to official statistics, the Lalitpur district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. It is largely agricultural; only in the city of Lalitpur there are - because of the favorable rail and transport connections - some larger craft businesses as well as shops, secondary schools, banks and other service companies.

history

Lalitpur formerly belonged to the Bundelkhand region , which came under the influence of the Marathas in the 17th and 18th centuries and was largely annexed by the Scindia rulers of Gwalior in 1812 . Since 1844 the area was also officially under British control. After India's independence (1947), Lalitpur belonged to the Jhansi district until it was declared a separate district in 1974.

Attractions

The main attraction of the district, which has hardly been developed for tourism, is the village of Deogarh with the Dashavatara temple , which is extremely important from a cultural and historical point of view and dates back to the Gupta period (around 500 AD). There are other temples nearby.
