history
The area of today's Chandauli district came under British rule at the end of the 18th century . During the British colonial period , the northern half of today's district area was part of the Benares district (Varanasi), the southern part belonged to the lands of the Maharajas of Benares and was initially part of the Mirzapur district . In 1911 the Maharaja's possessions were given the status of the Princely State of Benares . This consisted of two exclaves to the west and south-east of the city of Varanasi, the eastern part of which was in the area of today's Chandauli district. After Indian independence, the princely state of Benares was incorporated into the Varanasi district. In 1997, Chandauli broke away as an independent district from the Varanasi district.
