Lakhimpur Kheri is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh , which borders on Nepal .

The area is 7,680 km². The administrative seat is the city of Lakhimpur . The district is very rural and has a high poverty rate .

history

The northern part of Lakhimpur Kheri was held by Rajputs in the 10th century . Muslim rule slowly spread to this remote and inhospitable area. In the 14th century several forts were built along the northern border to prevent attacks from Nepal.

During the Mughal empire in the 17th century, the district belonged under the reign of Akbar I to the province of Avadh . The later history of the 17th century under the Nawabs of Avadh is marked by individual ruling families. Later the area fell to the British .

population

The population is 4,021,243 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.38%, which is very high. Lakhimpur Kheri has a gender ratio of 894 women per 1000 men. It has a literacy rate of 60.56% in 2011, an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. Almost 77% of the population are Hindus , approx. 20% are Muslims and approx. 2.3% are Sikhs .

The urbanization rate of the district is approximately 11.5%. The largest city is Lakhimpur with 151,993 inhabitants.
