Chitrakoot ( Hindi : चित्रकूट जिला; also Chitrakut ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
Chitrakoot (meaning "hill of many wonders") is located in the south of Uttar Pradesh in the Chitrakoot division . It is located in the north of the Vindhya Mountains . The northern border of the district is formed by the Yamuna River . The district was created on September 4, 1998 from the Tehsils Karwi and Mau of the Banda district . The capital is the city of Chitrakoot Dham . The district covers 3216 km².

The population of Chitrakoot was 999,730 at the 2011 census. 10 years earlier it was 766,225. The gender ratio was 879 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 65.05% (75.80% for men, 52.74% for women). 96.33% of the population were Hindu and 3.48% Muslim .
