The Ambedkar Nagar District ( Hindi : अंबेडकर नगर , Urdu : امبیڈکر نگر) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative center is the city of Akbarpur , the largest city is Tanda . The district is named after the social reformer and politician BR Ambedkar .
geography
The Ambedkar District is located in the east of the Awadh (Oudh) region in central Uttar Pradesh and belongs to the Faizabad Division . Neighboring districts are Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar in the north, Gorakhpur in the northeast, Azamgarh in the southeast, Sultanpur in the southwest and Faizabad in the west.
The district area covers an area of 2350 km² and belongs entirely to the flat Ganges plain . In the north, the Ghaghara , a large tributary of the Ganges , forms the border of Ambedkar Nagar. In addition, the Tamsa River (Tons) flows through the district area.

The Ambedkar Nagar District is divided into the five Tehsils Tanda, Allapur, Jalapur, Akbarpur and Bhiti.
history
Ambedkar Nagar was founded in 1995 as an independent district. The area had previously been part of Faizabad District . Like many other districts that were formed during the reign of BSP politician Mayawati , the Ambedkar Nagar District was named after an icon of the Dalit movement, the social reformer and politician BR Ambedkar .
population
According to the 2011 Indian census, the Ambedkar Nagar district has 2,397,888 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 18 percent and thus somewhat more slowly than the Uttar Pradesh mean (20 percent). The population density of 1020 inhabitants per km² is above the already high average of the state of 829 inhabitants per km². The district has a very rural character: only 12 percent of the population live in cities. At 72 percent, the literacy rate is higher than the Uttar Pradesh mean (68 percent) and corresponds almost exactly to the overall Indian average (73 percent).
According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up the majority of the district's residents at 83 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of 16 percent. Most Muslims live in cities: They even make up the majority of the urban population.
