Mayawati ( Hindi : मायावती , Māyāvatī ; born January 15, 1956 in Delhi ) is an Indian politician of the Bahujan Samaj Party . She held the office of Chief Minister (heads of government) of Uttar Pradesh , the most populous state in India, in 1995, 1997, 2002–2003 and 2007–2012 . She leads the list of income tax payers among Indian politicians with a tax payment of Rs. 260,000,000 for the year 2007/08 (equivalent to about € 6.6 million at the time), which repeatedly raises the question of how they manage their wealth has come. Her followers like to call her "Behenji", our sister.

Life

Although she comes from a Dalit family in Delhi, she enjoyed an above-average education and graduated with a bachelor's degree in law and a bachelor's degree in education. After a short career as a teacher and training at the Administration Academy (Bharatiya Prashasanika Seva), she was accepted into his team by Kanshi Ram , who named her in 2001 as his successor as the leader of the BSP he founded , which she followed after his death in 2006 .

politics

In the 2007 elections, she won the majority in Uttar Pradesh with her BSP and has now been Chief Minister of the State for a longer period after having held the office several times between 1995 and 2003, each time for a short time with changing coalitions. While her supporters see her as a fighter against corruption, opponents accuse her of corruption. Despite all hostility, including the erection of monuments to Buddha and the founder of Indian neo-Buddhism Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar , Mayawati has managed to increase her popularity in recent years.

In the months leading up to the all-India parliamentary elections in 2009 , she was often named as the rising leading figure of the third camp (alongside Congress and the BJP ). With a meager win of 2 mandates, the choice for Mayawati and her BSP was very disappointing.

By early 2010, Mayawati had erected several statues and statues of herself and her former mentors valued at over $ 1 billion. In return, her political opponents accused her of wanting to glorify herself at the expense of taxpayers. After the monuments were repeatedly the target of property damage and destruction, Mayawati demanded that a special police force be set up to protect the monuments. The cost of founding the unit was estimated at US $ 11.6 million and its annual maintenance at around US $ 3 million. The Indian Supreme Court prohibited the erection of any further monuments until an examination of the legality of their erection has been completed.

Mayawati's term of office ended on March 7, 2012, and was succeeded by Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party , who has been in office since March 15, 2012.
