Kanshi Ram

Kanshi Ram ( Hindi : कांशीराम , Kānśīrām ; born March 15, 1934 in Khawapur , Punjab ; † October 9, 2006 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician and founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party .

biography

Kanshiram came from a village in the Panjab district of Ropar and was a member of the Dalits . After attending school, he nevertheless completed a degree at the state college of Ropar, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). Due to a quota system, he got a job in the office of the Defense Research and Development Organization in Khadki . During this time, in 1965, he joined a group of government officials of Dalit origin who opposed the ban on commemorating the birthday of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar , the leader of the Dalits.

In 1973 he was the founder of the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees' Federation (BAMCEF), a non-political and non-religious organization for the protection of minorities, which was re-established on December 6, 1978, the birthday of BR Ambedkar. Later he was also the founder of another social organization, the so-called DS4. In 1981 he began to unite the Dalit and continued this in 1984 as the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party .

In the April 1996 election he was elected member of the eleventh Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament, where he represented the interests of the constituency of Hoshiarpur for one term . In the following Lok Sabha he was from 1998 to 1999 representative of the constituency of Etawah ( Uttar Pradesh ). In 2001 he publicly named the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh , Mayawati , as his successor. In 2004 he retired from public life due to multiple illnesses.
