Akhilesh Yadav ( Hindi : अखिलेश यादव Akhileś Yādav [ ʌkʰɪˈleːʃ ˈjɑːd̪ʌʋ ]; born July 1, 1973 in Saifai , Etawah district ) is an Indian politician of the Samajwadi Party from the state of Uttar Pradesh . From 2012 to 2017 he was the acting Chief Minister ( Prime Minister ) of Uttar Pradesh.

Akhilesh Yadav was born on July 1, 1973 in Saifai village in Etawah district in western Uttar Pradesh. He is the son of the politician Mulayam Singh Yadav , who held the office of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times. The family belongs to the Yadav , a caste just above the Dalits (casteless) according to the traditional caste system , but which has a strong demographic representation in Uttar Pradesh and has correspondingly great political influence. The Samajwadi Party, founded by Akhilesh Yadav's father, has a strong following among the Yadav and other low castes.

Akhilesh Yadav attended a military boarding school in Rajasthan and then studied environmental engineering at the University of Mysore and in Sydney . He finished his studies with a master’s degree . Akhilesh Yadav's political career began in 2000 when he at a by-election for the Samajwadi Party in the constituency Kannauj in the Lok Sabha was elected, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. In the elections in 2004 and in 2009 he defended his constituency. In the parliamentary elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav was a driving force in the election campaign of the Samajwadi Party. After his party won the election with an absolute majority, Akhilesh Yadav was named the new Chief Minister. On March 15, 2012, he was united in office. At the age of 38 he was the youngest Chief Minister in the history of Uttar Pradesh.

In the years after 2014, Akhilesh Yadav fell out with his father, who continued to hold the office of chairman of the Samajwadi Party. After his father even expelled him from the party for a day, Akhilesh Yadav convened an extraordinary meeting of delegates on January 1, 2017, from which he was elected by a large majority as the new party chairman. His father received an honorary position as the party's “supreme mentor” with largely only ceremonial powers.
