Kannauj ( Hindi : कन्नौज , Kannauj ) is an old city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with almost 85,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Kannauj is the administrative center of the district of the same name . The city lies on the Ganges . In earlier times it was the capital of great Hindu empires such as Harshavardhana and the Pratihara . Its decline began in 1018 when it was destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni .
