Unnao is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
The area is 4558 km². The administrative seat is the city of Unnao .
history
Some fighting took place in this area during the Sepoy Uprising of 1857 . After the mutiny, the civil administration in the Unnao district with its headquarters in Unnao was rebuilt. The area of the district, however, was significantly smaller until 1869 when it assumed its present form. In the same year the city of Unnao was founded as a community.
population
The population is 3,108,367 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 15.11% and was therefore very high. Unnao has a gender ratio of 906 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 66.37% in 2011, an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is below the national average. Just under 88% of the population are Hindus and around 12% are Muslims . The Awadhi language is common in the district.
Almost 17.1% of the population live in cities. The largest city in the district was Unnao with 177,658 inhabitants.
