Unnao is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The area is 4558 km². The administrative seat is the city of Unnao .

history

Some fighting took place in this area during the Sepoy Uprising of 1857 . After the mutiny, the civil administration in the Unnao district with its headquarters in Unnao was rebuilt. The area of ​​the district, however, was significantly smaller until 1869 when it assumed its present form. In the same year the city of Unnao was founded as a community.

population

The population is 3,108,367 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 15.11% and was therefore very high. Unnao has a gender ratio of 906 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 66.37% in 2011, an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is below the national average. Just under 88% of the population are Hindus and around 12% are Muslims . The Awadhi language is common in the district.

Almost 17.1% of the population live in cities. The largest city in the district was Unnao with 177,658 inhabitants.
