Baghpat is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The area is 1321 km². The administrative seat is the city of Baghpat .

history

The city of Baghpat, after which the district gets its name, derives its name from either Vyagprastha ("land of tigers") or from Vakyaprasth ("place for talking"). The city was eventually called Baghpat or Bagpat during the Mughal era . Initially a small trading center, the city gained importance after the Indian uprising of 1857 and became the seat of Tehsil Baghpat .

Baghpat District was established in 1997 and created from the former Tehsil Baghpat of Meerut District .

The population is 1,303,048 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 11.95%. Baghpat has a gender ratio of 901 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 72.01% in 2011, an increase of approximately 8 percentage points compared to 2001. Almost 70% of the population are Hindus , approximately 28% are Muslims and approximately 1% are Jainas .

The urbanization rate of the district was approximately 21%. The largest city was Baraut with 103,764 inhabitants.
