The district of Mirzapur ( Hindi : मिर्ज़ापुर जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Mirzapur .

The district of Mirzapur is located in the southeast of Uttar Pradesh on the southern bank of the Ganges . It has an area of ​​4405 km². The northern part of the district area belongs to the flat and intensively agriculturally used Ganges plain , to the south the terrain rises to the Vindhya plateau , which here almost reaches the Ganges. Neighboring districts are Allahabad in the west, Sant Ravidas Nagar and Varanasi in the north, Chandauli in the east, Sonbhadra in the southeast, Singrauli in the south and Rewa in the southwest. The latter two already belong to the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh .

The district belongs to the Mirzapur division and is divided into the five Tehsils Mirzapur Sadar, Chunar, Lalganj and Marihan.

history

After the British had brought the area of ​​Mirzapur under their rule at the end of the 18th century, they first incorporated it as part of the Benares (Varanasi) district in British India . In 1830 Mirzapur became an independent district. At first it also included the lands of the Maharajas of Benares, which in 1911 received the status of the Princely State of Benares . During the British rule, the district was part of the Ceded and Conquered Provinces ( Northwestern Provinces from 1836 ), which became part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in 1902 . After Indian independence in 1947, the United Provinces became the state of Uttar Pradesh. In 1989, the southeastern part of the Mirzapur district became the Sonbhadra district.

According to the 2011 census, the Mirzapur district has 2,496,970 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 20 percent. The population density of 567 inhabitants per km² is below the Uttar Pradesh average (829 inhabitants per km²). 14 percent of the residents of the Mirzapur district live in cities. At 68 percent, the literacy rate corresponds to the mean value for the state.

According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up the vast majority of the district's residents with 92 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of just under eight percent.
