The district of Azamgarh ( Hindi : आज़ामगढ़ जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Azamgarh .
geography
The Azamgarh District is located in the east of Uttar Pradesh and belongs to the Azamgarh Division . Neighboring districts are Mau in the east, Ghazipur in the southeast, Jaunpur in the southwest, Sultanpur in the west, Ambedkar Nagar in the northwest and Gorakhpur in the northeast. The district area has an area of 4054 km² and belongs entirely to the flat and intensively agriculturally used Ganges plain . In the northeast, the Ghaghara River forms the border of the Azamgarh district in parts. In addition, the Tamsa (Tons), a smaller tributary of the Ganges , flows through the district area.
The Azamgarh District is divided into the seven Tehsils Sadar, Nijamabad, Phoolpur, Boodhanpur, Lalganj, Mehnagar and Sagari.
history
The Azamgarh district was established as an independent district of the United Provinces during the British colonial era in 1832 . At first it also included the area of today's Ballia and Mau districts . Ballia broke away from Azamgarh as an independent district in 1879. After Indian independence, the state of Uttar Pradesh was formed from the United Provinces. In 1988 the Mau district became an independent district.
population
According to the 2011 Indian census, the Azamgarh district has 4,613,913 inhabitants. This makes it the fourth largest district of Uttar Pradesh in terms of population. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 17 percent and thus a little more slowly than the Uttar Pradesh mean (20 percent). The population density of 1138 inhabitants per km² is above the already high average of the state (829 inhabitants per km²). The district has a very rural character: only nine percent of the population live in cities. At 71 percent, the literacy rate is above the Uttar Pradesh mean (68 percent) but still below the overall Indian average (73 percent).
According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up a clear majority of the district's residents at 85 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of 15 percent. The Muslims are mainly concentrated in the cities of the district: Muslims make up almost half of the city's residents.
