Azamgarh ( Hindi : आज़ामगढ़ , Urdu : اعظم گڑھ; Āzāmgaṛh [ aːˈzaːmɡʌɽʱ ]) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 110,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
It is located on the banks of the Tamsa River (Tons) around 90 kilometers north of Varanasi in eastern Uttar Pradesh and is the administrative seat of the Azamgarh District and the Azamgarh Division .
Azamgarh was founded around 1665 when Azam Khan, a Rajput prince who converted to Islam , built a fortress here. The city was named after him ( garh means "fortress").
Azamgarh is connected to the railway network via the railway line from Shahganj to Mau .
