The parliamentary elections in São Tomé and Príncipe 2010 took place on August 1, 2010 after being postponed twice for a few months. It was the 6th free parliamentary elections São Tomé and Príncipe since the multiparty system was introduced in the West African island nation in a referendum in 1990 .
The Movimento Democrático das Forças da Mudança party - Partido Liberal of President Fradique de Menezes suffered a landslide defeat and only won one seat in the 55-seat parliament - compared to 22 seats in the 2006 general election . In contrast, the opposition Acção Democrática Independente of former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada won almost half of the seats.
