The parliamentary elections in São Tomé and Príncipe 1991 took place on January 20, 1991 in the West African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe . It was the first free elections for the country's National Assembly . In the previous year 1990, the multi-party system was only introduced through a referendum . The result was a victory for the Partido de Convergência Democrática-Grupa de Reflexão ("Party of Democratic Convergence - Group of Reflection"), which won 33 of the 55 seats, and a defeat of the former state party Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe ( "Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe / Social Democratic Party"). The turnout was 76.7%.

background

The main opponents of the elections were the two aforementioned parties, Partido de Convergência Democrática-Grupa de Reflexão (PCD-GR) and Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe / Partido Social Democrata (MLSTP-PSD). The PCD-GR emerged from an association of MLSTP dissidents , independents and young experts. Among the smaller parties that took part in the election are the FDC or Frente Democrática Cristã ("Christian Democratic Front") and the Coligação Democrática da Oposição (CODO, "Oppositional Democratic Coalition"), which consisted of an amalgamation of three oppositional movements that had been active in exile overseas until then had emerged.

Foreign observers rated the elections as free, transparent and fair. The cause of the MLSTP's defeat was generally seen in the country's economic situation. A transitional government under Daniel Daio was installed in February and it was decided to hold presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe in March of the same year.
