The parliamentary elections in São Tomé and Príncipe 2018 took place on October 7, 2018 . It was the eighth free elections for the eleventh legislative period of the 55-seat Assembleia Nacional in São Tomé and Príncipe . 97,274 voters were called to vote from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in 247 polling stations .

The Acção Democrática Independente (ADI) government of Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada wants to defend the parliamentary majority of 33 seats it won in 2010 and expanded in 2014 against the opposition party Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe-Partido Social Democrata (MLSTP-PSD) with 16 seats.

The Partido de Convergência Democrática - Grupa de Reflexão (PCD) renewed the electoral alliance that existed in 2002 and 2006 with the Movimento Democrático das Forças da Mudança-Partido Liberal (MDFM-PL) and the ADI spin-off União dos Democratas para Cidadania e DesenDvolvimento ( UDV ) .

The topic of the election campaign included the tense economic situation of São Tomés and Príncipes and the high proportion of the population living below the poverty line , which, according to the MLSTP-PSD, has increased under the ADI government. The last official statistics are from 2010. According to the World Bank , nothing fundamental has changed in the poverty rate since then. Around a third of the population still has less than US $ 1.9 and two thirds of the population less than US $ 3.2 per day.

The National Electoral Commission published its preliminary results on Monday morning.

Accordingly, the previous governing party ADI has lost its absolute majority with a loss of eight seats in the Assembleia Nacional. With only 23 seats, it has one seat ahead of the big election winner MLSTP-PSD, who are represented in the Assembleia Nacional with seven new mandates and 22 seats.

The electoral alliance of PCD, MDFM and UDD have lost a seat. New to the Assembleia Nacional is the list of independents with two members.
