The Assembleia Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe ( German National Assembly of São Tomé and Príncipe ) is the parliament in the unicameral system of the West African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe .

Fifty-five members are elected to the Assembleia Nacional for a four-year term using proportional representation. Every citizen aged 18 and over is entitled to vote.

The Assembleia Nacional is based in the Palácio dos Congressos , a building in the capital São Tomé .

From 1975 to 1990 São Tomé and Príncipe was a one-party state with the only party Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe . The transition to electoral democracy and the multi-party system was achieved with the constitutional referendum in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1990 and the subsequent parliamentary elections in 1991 . After the parliamentary elections on August 1, 2010 , the MLSTP-PSD was no longer the strongest party for the first time.
