National Assembly of Zambia

National Assembly (English National Assembly of Zambia ) is the legislature of the African state of Zambia .

The National Assembly of Zambia has 165 seats (as of 2016). 156 of these are awarded in general, free and secret elections based on majority voting. Eight seats are occupied by the President, who also appoints the Speaker of Parliament.

After the decades of Kenneth Kaunda's dictatorship, the party landscape in Zambia was reorganized in 1991.

The National Assembly was last elected on August 11, 2016 - at the same time as the election of the President, which Edgar Lungu (PF) won. With a share of around 42 percent, the PF won the absolute majority of the seats thanks to the majority vote with 80 seats. The United Party for National Development won 41.7% but only 58 seats. Independents won 14 mandates.

Only 156 mandates are given for 2006, as three were still vacant due to the death of candidates. For 2011 only 157 seats are given, as two seats were vacant after the election.
