The National Assembly ( French Assemblée Nationale , English National Assembly ) is the parliament of Cameroon .
180 members of the National Assembly are elected for five years each.
history
Cameroon gained independence from France in the "African year" of 1960. Parliamentary elections were held in 1964, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2020. The 1992 election is considered to be the first reasonably free parliamentary election in the history of Cameroon . Ahmadou Ahidjo was President of Cameroon from 1960 to 1982 and ruled as a dictator; his successor Paul Biya (* 1933) has ruled since 1982 until today (February 2020).
elections
Five years after the parliamentary elections on July 22, 2007, the next election was supposed to take place in July 2012, but did not take place until September 30, 2013. The Rassemblement démocratique du Peuple Camerounais party received 148 out of 180 seats, the largest opposition party was the Front Social Démocrate . On February 9, 2020 , a general election was held again.

Parliament building
The National Assembly is located in the capital, Yaoundé , in the Palais de Verre of Ngoa-Ekelle. The parliament building burned down completely in mid-November 2017.
